Braamfontein Spruit & Delta Park Clean-up – 20 July

Hi Bombers

Here are a couple of great opportunities for you to do good with 67 minutes of Community Service for Mandela’s birthday:

1. This coming Saturday, 20th July at 08h00, the Bryanston Community is arranging a clean-up of the Spruit, starting at the Belgrave low-level bridge that goes from Bryanston to River Club. This is where the 5 km Bombers Time-trial starts from. http://goo.gl/maps/qog2R .The Spruit is well used by trail runners and cyclists and by helping to clean up the Spruit, you will be helping to make it a bit more pleasurable to use – and safer too!! You can find out more details from here on www.CleanSpruit.co.za

2. Also on Saturday 20th July at 09h00, the Blairgowrie Community Association is arranging a clean-up of the Bird Sanctuary at Delta Park. The Bird Park is right in the centre of Delta Park, next to the start of the 5km Delta Park Run (which starts at 08h00 on a Saturday, so you can still get your run in and come and help). Runners will also pass the Bird Sanctuary on almost every RAC Club Run. You can find out more details here on https://www.facebook.com/groups/268026343372/permalink/10151750954118373/

Both the Spruit and Delta Park are valuable resources to us living in Joburg, so I’d suggest you really try to help at one of these initiatives. It is also a great way to teach your kids the importance of ‘giving back’.

Have an awesome week.

Cheers

Iano

Sylvia’s birthday run – Wed 21st March

Hello Everyone,

We are running from the church (BMC) at 6:15 on the 21st March (Thursday) and run for around 90 min. After this, we will walk across the road to have a cup of coffee at Junipas with Sylvia, who celebrates her 30th.

Hope you can make the run, if not, just come for coffee/breakfast.

If you want to run a little less, Terry, MJ and Sue Naude will be starting a little later and running around 8km.

Please sms Sylvia on 0828440523 if you can make it, so she can book a table.

Kind regards, Gill

Happy 40th Birthday Doug

Dear Doug,

Here to a special person celebrating the BIG 40 today:

So you’ve got a few
Gray hairs
Who cares?
You’re noticing the
First lines
It’s fine!
Don’t sweat the small stuff
There’s nothing to fear
Now you are 40
Let’s raise a BIG cheer!

Kind regards

Lianne’s Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge

From Lianne:

Dear Friends

I have entered the 94.7 cycle race this year with the aim of cycling it to raise money for a very worthy cause – the orphange Hotel Hope. This cycling thing has been a real test of having to do something very much out of my comfort zone!!! Please read my attached letter and help me in meeting my target for this charity!!! Please pass this on to your family and friends and see this as your Christmas Gift to a little child in need.

18 more sleeps!!!! – what a scary thought and for those of you who are also cycling… good luck and keep well away from me one race day I am liable to knock you off!!!

Love Lianne

Hello my special running friends

From Elaine in Perth:

Hello All,

Its been two sleeps and two days and if I was truly honest, I would say two sleeps and two days to long.

What a shock and don’t get me wrong. I know that this move was my idea, me pushing my family, but believe me when the reality faces you in the face, it is not pleasant. Have to be strong as I don’t have any tears left in this body – so it’s a case of put on a brave face and move forward.

Had a good flight, apartment is on the 11th floor of a building in the main street of Perth. It is comfy and one has a side view of the Swan River. Derrick started his new job on Monday and is enjoying it. Liam and I have done the free bus rides up and down the main road of Perth, to do some shopping at the local Woollies (not nearly in the SA version’s league). Have taken the train to my friend who lives North of Perth. Both the bus and the train experiences were very pleasant, on time, clean and well maintained. Life here in Perth is very expensive, from buying groceries to have a quick cup of coffee.

The family and I are still not quite in the Perth time zone – watching the free to air tv offerings until 1am and then not able to wake up before 7H30. So needless to say have not been out for a run or cycle. Need to get my A into G.

I miss you guys so much – actually I miss everything back in JHB. Enjoy

Luv

"Elaine"

News from Etienne in France

From Etienne:

Hi

I hope you are well combining work, family and leisure activities with success.

Some news from Avignon. The family adjusted well. They enjoy the independance you can have when leaving a small town where transport is easy: walk or ride your bike.

On my side I will be leaving my employer McCormick on June 22nd. I bought a small company in the building industry. I will be supplying flat glass to the artisans or individuals. It employs 14 persons. This is a very new start, quiet far from the corporate world.

I am still running 40-50k a week. I haven’t yet found a group as nice as the Bombers but does it exist? I resumed mountaineering. I was very lucky three weeks ago to survive an avalanche. I was with a group of 7, 5 of us were taken by the avalanche. It is incredible. Just like a huge wave. Fortunately I wasn’t buried at the end. Thanks to the electronic sensors we have been able to find quickly enough one guy who was totally buried. The guy had been burried for 6-7 minutes. Quiet frightening. It seems my wife won’t allow me to go up there before long.

Are you still tough with the group? I hope so, they won’t regret it.

Wish all the best to the Comerade runners. I will think of them on the day.

Regards and hoping to see some of you in France one day.

Etienne.

Update from the Salt Rock Slacker and Comrades Berg Training Run – 5 – 6 May 2012

From Denton:

Hi All

Just to let you know that all is alive and well at the Bombers newly established branch in Salt Rock Kwazulu-Natal. The minute I can recruit just one more runner we will change our name to the Salt Rock Slackers. At the rate I’m going this could take a while! I am pleased to report that our only member did us proud at the local time trials, last week, by placing 8th in the 8km time trial despite some really stiff competition. If you are thinking there were only 8 runners Iano & Doug you are both wrong. There were 10!

On a more serious note I have mentioned to some of you that I am planning to do my Comrades long training run in the Berg from the Drakensberg Gardens Hotel on Saturday 5th May. I would love some company! It is a spectacular 58km run from the hotel to the main road and back. The road is quiet enough for partners, children and spouses to second you on bikes and in cars. There is the Drakensberg Gardens Hotel, two time share resorts, self catering accommodation, the Parks Board Camp site and a private caravan park all nearby. I am still waiting to see if we can get discounted rates from the hotel.

The plan is to do the run on Saturday and then have the weekend to relax and enjoy the Berg with family and friends. We could also do dinner at the hotel on Saturday night. The resort is 30km from Underberg and about 7 hours from Joburg so you will probably need to leave Joburg around lunch time on Friday to arrive in time for supper.

I would like to get an indication of who would be keen to give it a bash. If you are keen please email me on dentonmuil@gmail.com and let me know how many of you and what accommodation option you prefer.

Your mate in running
Denton
